Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art at Virginia Wesleyan University
The new Virginia MOCA museum emphasizes both visitor experience and operational efficiency with a welcoming layout, engaging educational spaces, and thoughtful accommodations for all. Key features include a sunlit atrium that leads to expanded gallery spaces, two large exhibition galleries, and an interactive ARTLab gallery. Virginia MOCA’s prized Chihuly sculpture will be prominently displayed, while four reimagined art studios and a versatile conference room provide creative flexibility. The increased square footage allows for more innovative exhibitions, supported by functional art handling areas, a workshop, clean room, and secure vault. Additionally, a catering kitchen and event storage accommodate receptions for up to 150 seated or 250 standing guests. Landscaped outdoor areas and flexible, bright workspaces for the museum’s creative team further enhance the space. A new plaza will offer opportunities for community engagement, artistic expression, and visitor relaxation, hosting outdoor installations, performances, workshops, social gatherings, and community events. The surrounding grounds will also feature outdoor sculptures. Overall, the new Virginia MOCA ensures a welcoming and enriching experience for visitors while optimizing productivity for staff.
