In response to the spread of COVID-19, states continue to implement stay-at-home orders and close non-essential businesses. Fortunately for the industry, most states have deemed construction essential. In Virginia, jobsites remain open. And while work continues, it looks different than a month ago as companies adapt to ensure worker safety. At Hourigan, flattening the curve is a top priority, and below are some of the ways our field staff is doing just that.
Social Distancing
As a first line of defense, site managers are decreasing worker counts and utilizing shift work whenever possible. Site access is restricted for anyone with possible exposure to the virus and non-essential work travel has halted.
Onsite, workers are conscious of maintaining space among themselves. Newly created break areas and eliminated potential gathering sites, such as food trucks, also help ensure minimal unnecessary contact. Projects remain on track with virtual walk-throughs for system inspections. Teams have also distributed masks and face covers in accordance with CDC recommendations.
Sanitation
Project sites have seen a larger emphasis on sanitation, especially of high-touch areas. Portable toilets and railings are receiving special attention. In addition to typical safety signage, COVID-19 guidelines and best practices remind workers to wash their hands frequently and keep their distance from each other. Sites have added more handwashing stations, and even built them when unavailable through suppliers.
Regular, Transparent Communication
Daily meetings and staff updates regarding COVID-19 ensure that everyone is well-informed and that concerns are addressed. Regular communication with owners and architects is also vital to ensuring that projects remain on track. Because in-person meetings are limited, utilizing technology, such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom, has become essential.
As OSHA and CDC recommendations and guidelines change, companies must adapt their jobsites to meet requirements. With new information provided daily, workers should remain vigilant and continue to work toward securing the safety and health of themselves and their team.
