Hourigan Named Lead General Contractor for New Downtown Richmond Tower

03.14.16 | News

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – March 14, 2016 – A new high-rise is set to take shape in downtown Richmond, VA for Dominion Resources, and Hourigan was chosen by the power and energy company as the lead construction management firm for the project. Hourigan will direct all aspects of the structure’s design-build from preconstruction to final closeout. The tower at 111 S. Sixth St. is planned at 20 stories and 908,000 square feet.

The project is a joint venture between Hourigan and Clayco, a strategic partner with experience in high-rises, deep-pile concrete foundations, and curtain wall (structural) glass – all of which will be major elements for the building. Clayco most recently worked in Richmond on Gateway Plaza, an elegant 18-story glass tower one block from the site of the Dominion project. Other construction and engineering partners include civil engineering firm Timmons Group; architect of record Kendall/Heaton Associates; architect Pickard-Chilton; and workplace environment group PDR.

“Hourigan is honored and proud to take on this project for Dominion and our city,” said Mark Hourigan, president of Hourigan. “Through this transformative project, we and our partners look to elevate Richmond’s status as a world-class city.”

Hourigan has a great history with Dominion, and has led construction on a number of its properties throughout Virginia, such as the Dominion Energy Clearinghouse on the banks of the James River, a commercial office in Northern Virginia, an energy command center in Henrico County, and the power company’s building at 8th and Main Streets in Richmond.

Demolition on the five-story Richmond Plaza at 111 S. 6th St. will begin this summer to make way for the foundation of the new tower, which is expected to be completed in 2019.
